As of 2010, the top five most popular male names were Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Jayden and William. Other male names that made the top ten most popular male names list were Alexander, Noah and Aiden. For the most popular female names, as of 2010, the top five were Isabella, Sophia, Emma, Olivia and Ava. Other names to make the top ten most popular list, for female names, were Emily, Abigail and Madison.

Names often become popular based on popular culture. Popular culture is the study of various cultures and the customs that surround them. Popular names are often a result of this. People name children after famous movie stars, singers and political figures. Many people believe this is a way that promotes how to be popular, by having a popular name.

Names are even popular with pets; especially dogs. Some of the top popular dog names as of 2010 for male dogs were Max, Buddy, Jake, Rocky, Buster and Jack. For female dogs, Molly, Maggie, Daisy, Lucy, Ginger and Sophie were among the most popular. Other popular dog names are Shadow, Teddy, Charlie, Lady, Bella, Princess and Rosie.
